I guess you can't say that - after all, the temple was built and functioned at God's command and according to God's instructions, albeit often in a formal or piecemeal manner.

So why does Jesus tell the disciples this information? There could be many reasons:

He simply wanted to tell them an "interesting" fact from the near future (the destruction occurred in less than forty years).

Once again he confirmed his extraordinary "prophetic" authority.

He wanted to warn them to beware in the future and not to be in Jerusalem at the time in question (he gives such a warning explicitly a few verses later).

Rather, Jesus is pointing out to the disciples that it is not healthy to fixate on the existence of the temple. The temple itself is just stones, and the worship services are just acts - the key is whether the Lord is present in the temple. And that was highly doubtful at the time - after all, the Jews were about to kill God Himself. In this context, the admiring "gushing" over the temple is completely out of place.

The goal of the temple and everything that happens in it is to "get God into the temple." And when God does get there, I kill Him.

The important thing is that God has no sentiment towards His temple. In Jer. 22:24 something similar is written: As I live, saith the LORD, though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah be the signet ring on my right hand, yet will I pluck thee out of thence.

God speaks in terms of: I don't give a damn what people think about the importance of the temple, about it being My temple, etc. If you do not come to your senses and truly repent, I will not hesitate to have it destroyed to the ground.

Such an attitude is perfectly understandable - what good does it do for people to build me a mausoleum if they murdered my son at the same time? What's more important? Is such a mausoleum of the slightest value to me? Not only does it not, but it disgusts me to my soul as the height of hypocrisy and I will gladly have it demolished.

3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, his disciples came to him privately, saying, "Tell us when it will be, and what 1 "Sing, O barren one, who did not bear; break forth into singing and cry aloud, you who have not been in labor! It is, however, 14 times in Paul's letters (1Co 15:23 ... 1Th 2:19; 1Th 3:13 ...), then in Jas 5:7n; 2Pe 1:16; 2Pe 3:4.2Pe 3:12; 1Jn 2:28.

According to David Pawson (Understanding the Second Coming), the word parousia has two uses, both associated with royal power:

One refers to a foreign king who arrives with his army at the border of a country he intends to invade, conquer and occupy.

The second refers to a native king who comes with his court to visit one of his cities; in this case the citizens go out to meet him far beyond the city walls, so that they may honour him by passing through the gate with him.

These two images perfectly combine the twofold aspect of Jesus' return: unbelievers will see him as a foreign invader; believers will welcome and honor him as their ruler.

Another term for Christ's return is epiphanies: According to Pawson, it is best translated as a sudden "appearance on the scene". Again, it is used of a king appearing before his subjects. It is most prominently used in the context of a worship service where God visibly appears, e.g., when the glory of the shekinah descended upon the tabernacle or temple. God appears on the scene to help his people, especially in critical situations. Epiphany is used for both the first and second coming of Christ. It occurs mainly in Paul's letters.

4 Jesus answered and said to them, "Take heed that no one deceives you.

What, then, does Jesus consider essential to communicate concerning the time and circumstances of his return?

In the first place, it warns against leads - which is surprising and certainly alarming. Seduction is one of the Church's biggest problems! That this was, is, and will be the case is evident from the epistles and the book of Revelation - for example, in the letters to the seven churches, succumbing to the seductions of false teachers is one of the main criticisms.

Throughout the history of the Church, heresies of all kinds have been rampant.

We are also witnessing a remarkable "boom" of strange views in the Church today. It is not at all clear where the world is going these days (especially since the second election of Donald Trump, written 5/2025), which inevitably feeds the various "seductions". But deciding what is a seduction is not easy.

5 For many will come. (in my name) and they will say, 'I am the Christ,' and they will deceive many.

n~: based on my name; ř. epi tó ...

We learn, at least in part, what the seductions will consist of - that the there will be people claiming to be Christ.

These people will come in Jesus' name - so it's going to be Christians. While "I am Christ" could mean the universal "I am the savior of the world who will solve all its problems" (which all can hear), to come in Jesus' name is hard to imagine outside of Christianity.

A person who comes "in Jesus' name" must "worship" Jesus. Which makes no impression on non-Christians - so it's certainly about warning inside the church.

But in that case it is incomprehensible how they can "many" Christians "fall for" something like this.

It seems to me that even the historical experience of the Church1 There were certainly some people who occasionally claimed to be Christ, but they were few and their influence was limited. (In more recent times, one might consider Moon or Koresh).

If someone came forward today claiming to be Christ, he wouldn't stand a chance of getting much attention, in my opinion. Even political, cultural or religious figures with extremely megalomaniacal egos usually do not signal Christ-like ambitions. They would look ridiculous.

So Jesus is talking about something that is yet to occur more immediately before His return.

I'm just pointing out that I believe we are already living in the end times - but from that point of view, they are probably not "last" enough yet, and there will be "worse to come".

However, the emergence of numerous "conspiracies2" theories may indicate that people are already becoming more open to atypical or simplistic interpretations of reality

6 You will hear of wars and You will hear rumors of war. He gives the disciples (including us readers) the fig tree as an example.

What are we to learn from the fig tree?

The fig tree is a tree, sometimes shrubby, 3 to 10 metres tall.

By observing it (branches and leaves), the season can be reliably determined.

And that's the point: By closely observing the events around us, we are similarly reliably able to determine what stage of history the world is in. So:

Softening of branches and leaves = approaching summer.

False Christs, rumors of wars, international conflicts, famines, earthquakes, persecution of Christians, false prophets, spiritual coldness, universal preaching = the imminent coming of Christ.

Abomination of desolation = time to flee immediately.

Extreme tribulation, false christs with power = don't be deceived, endure.

Heavenly signs = just before the return.

The return itself will no longer need a sign - it will be significant enough.

34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, except all these things be done.

Jesus underscores the meaning of his words with a double "amen."

They are quite mysterious: Generation in the common understanding means generation or contemporaries. We can already say with certainty that the return of Jesus did not take place in the lifetime of the disciples and their contemporaries. What is the explanation?

At least some of Jesus' words (false messiahs, wars, persecution, hasty flight) were probably about the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70. Contemporaries may have lived to see these events.

The destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD can be seen as "Jesus returning in power" - He made it clear from heaven that He was able to enforce what He said.

The word tribe (genea) can also mean something else, e.g., people who reject Christ (there are enough of them and there will be enough of them to the end. Cf. Ž 78,8 "This is a rebellious and stubborn generation.").

The Jews as an ethnic group can be considered a generation - they will certainly see Christ's coming. The devil, despite all his efforts, has never succeeded and will never succeed in exterminating this people of God. (But the word ethnos is usually used for nation).

It is an interesting understanding that Jesus would have in mind a generation of people in whose lives the signs of the last days would begin to be fulfilled. That is, in the sense of: when the last prophecies begin to be fulfilled, everything will be completed very quickly - within one generation.

Those who experience the fulfillment of the first signs of the end will also experience His return.

How to understand generation?

For example, it can be people "born after XY". For example, I have repeatedly heard prophecies (first by John McFarlain) that people born after 1968 will experience revival in our country.

Nowadays, generations are named by letters - for example, it could be: The signs of Jesus have begun to be fulfilled and the people of Generation Z will witness His return.15 and younger.

35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away."

We can now recall that Jesus is speaking shortly before His death.

So everything he says has an even greater urgency than usual. The last words are often a summary of the most important things we would like to pass on to our descendants.

Here Jesus reminds us of the absolute binding and permanent validity of everything He has ever said. Surely he is not merely speaking of his present description of the meaning of his return: What I have just said to you has lasting validity - you don't have to take what I said before so seriously.

Jesus never spoke "into the wind." It is possible that he sometimes had only "casual" conversations with his disciples or dealt with short-term technical matters. Most of His words are not even recorded. However, we can be sure of the permanence of what we have recorded.

It is interesting to note that the created universe has a shorter shelf life compared to Jesus' words.

Information (word) was in the beginning and information will persist after the end of the created universe.

The materialists are deeply mistaken.

That He is the eternal God is clear. What is interesting in this context is that man is also an eternal being. He will exist even after the earth and the universe are "rolled up" like a carpet.

Again: None of Jesus' information is transitory, limited, or temporary. We have no precedents for the idea of the Trinity of God, where three persons of God are at the same time one God, and we have nothing to go on in thinking about it.

Here, "in between the talk" (Jesus primarily speaks of his return), we learn that there is no absolute unity of thought among the persons of the Trinity. It is not that what the Father knows, the Son automatically knows. If the Son is to know something, the Father must communicate it to Him.

Many questions arise from this information:

This is a theological problem because the Son loses one attribute of divinity (omniscience). The explanation may be e.g.:

"My son knows, but he doesn't say", or

"The Son-man does not know, but the Son-God knows", or

"My son might know, but he doesn't want to know out of humility or because of purposeful self-limitation", etc.

But these are rather skeletal constructions. The son's divinity is still sufficiently unquestionable.

Does it work the other way around? I mean, are there things the Son knows that the Father does not know? Probably not - the Father is omniscient, whereas Jesus is human and therefore has a limited thinking capacity.

What about the Holy Spirit - does He know the date or not? In this he might be more like the Father.

Is this a temporary "measure"? That is, doesn't the Father only communicate this information to the Son while He is on earth and tell Him when He returns to heaven? It's hard to say, but I'd say the Son doesn't know the exact date even now. (Jesus retains His humanity in eternity).

Why is that? Why does the Father keep this information exclusively for Himself? Does the Father not trust the Son's secrecy? Is he concerned that Jesus will reveal this important matter to the people? That he would speak out? Hardly.

Is he worried that the Son's enormous compassion would lead him to warn people and they would snap out of it at the last minute (which would not be fair on higher principle)? This explanation is the most likely, though difficult to imagine - it would imply that the Father is "harsher" in his approach to people than the extremely empathetic Son, that the Son could "spoil" the Father's plan of salvation by his compassion, undermining absolute justice, etc. Any of this is difficult to conceive of, but there is a reason for this "inter-trinitarian secrecy".

Jesus says to the disciples: I could not tell you, even if I wanted to. Sometimes it is better not to know. If I don't know, I can't reveal anything, I don't have to talk or think about the possibility, I'm not even "tempted" to reveal anything.

Jesus may be saying to the disciples: Don't push me, don't try to pry this information out of me - I just don't know it. He is ending, "shutting down" the discussion on the topic.

It is important for us humans not to know the exact date of the return - on the one hand, we are purposely given clues to be able to discern that the return is imminent, but only "roughly", not precisely.

If we knew the exact date, we would concentrate on preparation, which is not what God wants. Father wants us in a state of readiness lived permanently.

What would happen if we knew the specific date is nicely shown in the film "Tell the World" (2015) about Ellen White, the founder of Adventism16.

Martin Luther reckoned on 1636, John Wesley thought of 1874; both were wise enough to choose a year well in advance without having to live with their mistakes17. And for most people (especially older people), it is much, much more likely that they will die before Christ returns.

For the same reasons (to stay awake) that we may not know the exact time of Christ's return, we do not know the exact time of our death.

After death (or after a temporary sojourn in the "in-between" state of Sheol), Christians will be resurrected and encounter Christ on the Mount of Olives just as living Christians are transported from their homes and workplaces.

43 But know this, that if the householder had known at what time of the night the thief would come, he would have stayed awake, and would not have allowed He dig into the house.

Comparing your return to the arrival of a thief is strange at first glance. What are and are not the parallels of this comparison?

Firstly, it is certainly about unexpectedness: the thief does not wish the owner to be prepared for his arrival - he tries to arrive at the least likely and expected time. At a time when the owner is most likely to be asleep.

The owner on the contrary: In a way, he anticipates the possibility of robbery and tries to be prepared for thieves.

Jesus does not act like a thief; on the contrary, He spends this entire chapter warning the disciples by what they will recognize the time of His imminent return.

Who is the householder and who is the thief, and other aspects of the parable are explained by Jesus in the next verse:

44 Therefore be ye also ready, because ye know not the hour wherein the Son of man cometh."

The explanation of the parable of the thief is clear - it is about being ready for Christ's return, even though we do not know the exact time of His return.

Fortunately, being ready to return doesn't mean cutting back on sleep. Due to the rotation of the earth, a significant portion of Christians will find the voice of the angel trumpets in (physical) sleep, which is not at all a bad thing. Jesus is not talking about physical wakefulness, but spiritual wakefulness. If my relationship with Christ is solid, open, if I have confessed all my sins before sleeping, I can sleep without worry - the angels will simply wake me up before transporting me to Jerusalem.

What it means to be and not to be ready, to be and not to be awake, Jesus elaborates further:

45 Who then is a faithful and wise slave, whom his lord hath set over his household to give them food in due season?

Christians are expected to be Faithful . sensible.

Faithful is one who maintains a relationship or keeps a given word over the passage of time; faithfulness is manifested over time: whether I am married, am someone's friend, or am an employee, faithfulness is manifested by keeping the relationship and its obligations over time. Faithful spouses or friends support each other until death; faithful employees do not leave their positions for years.

Sensible is the one who acts rationally, thinks about what is right and what is worthwhile. In this case, to persevere in one's commitments to the Lord is very rational and not to be foolish.

As we shall see, the slave in this case acted very irrationally when he traded short-term gratification for remaining in service.

What was the purpose of a slave? He had control over his subordinates to exercise authority and take care of them.

It's a well-known combination authority and responsibility - These two attributes often go hand in hand: if I am entrusted with authority, I am given responsibility along with it.

On the one hand, the slave leader could give orders to his subordinates, on the other hand, he was responsible for ensuring that they were taken care of.

46 Blessed is the slave whom his lord shall require. its coming, he will find that he does.

We are still talking about the imminent return of Christ.

In this parable, who is the slave who has been entrusted with the office? At first glance, one might think of a "pastor" or other "church worker" (or a leader in general). They are responsible for their "sheep in the congregation" - they "lord it over" them to some degree and are obligated to bring them the nourishment of God's Word.

Did Jesus really mean it that way? It could be that he is speaking to his disciples - and they are "somehow" expected, because of their experience after the church is established, to lead and be responsible for the others.

But Jesus could have spoken more broadly - and a slave would then mean any Christian. No Christian (not even the most isolated) lives in a vacuum, only for himself; each has a significant responsibility for people and for the world around him. We are obliged to be light and salt. Salt that does not exhibit saltiness is useless and will be discarded.

Both interpretations are relevant.

Either way, the warnings about the need to watch are relevant to everyone ... and there are many in Scripture (the ten bridesmaids are probably the most famous).

47 Verily I say unto you, that he shall set him over all his goods.

Jesus says with all emphasis that the Lord highly values such slave/master behavior.

The Lord understands the difficulty of the task: he knows that his return took time, that the wait was long, that the temptations were considerable. The servant's faithfulness is all the more precious.

The reward will be significant - the servant will be promoted to one of the highest positions. His responsibility will continue to be much greater than it has been.

That God is about to entrust Christians (in His kingdom or in the Millennium) with significant "posts" we know, for example, from the parable of the sackcloth. Here we are told that they will be entrusted with "everything" - so it is quite possible that God is going to "delegate" most of His authority in the future.

48 But if that wicked slave shall say in his heart, 'My lord. (long time coming)

n.: lingers [to come];

Christianity is frighteningly real, and the "happy ending" is not at all obvious.

A slave has the freedom of choice and does not have to behave faithfully and reasonably at all. Or he may think "reasonably" in the opposite way - from the fact that nothing happens for a long time, the logic of his thinking may lead him to the conclusion that the probability of the master's return is generally slim.

This is not at all incomprehensible - if nothing has happened for ten years (let alone two thousand years), the probability that nothing will happen in the eleventh year (or the first two thousand years) is, logically speaking, quite considerable.

Maintaining loyalty even during a long period of waiting requires strong convictions and strong moral integrity.

So what did the evil slave conclude from his master's long absence?
