Moses was once again on a "business trip." He was doing his job.

He set out with the sheep to more remote areas - perhaps the grass around his home was already grazed, perhaps there was too great a concentration of shepherds. Maybe such "trips" with sheep were normal.

But maybe he had a desire for adventure or exploring new areas. And quite possibly he had an inner urge or was directed to Choreb by sequence of coincidences.

Any of us can be approached by God at any time - for example, at work.

Moses had a willing heart even after forty years. His desire to serve God or help his nation did not fade from him, though at eighty he probably expected nothing great.

We said that from today's perspective, Moses was about the strength of a man in his fifties - but even so, he may have felt that his life is over, that his window of opportunity to serve the Lord is already closed.

At that time, Horeb was not yet God's mountain - its history as "God's" mountain will only begin to unfold from now on, when the Lord appears to Moses there.

Then other important events will happen on Choréb:

Horeb is identified with Sinai, the place of the giving of the Law

Elijah met the Lord at Horeb (1 Kings 19)

2 And the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed.

n.: as (a flame of fire); this is how Gesenius classifies h. b- here;

[(unknown) species of thorny shrub];

So Moses saw the burning bush - but the fire was strange.

It is a strange thing, but I could imagine something more spectacular from God.

That the bush was burning was not so strange - what caught Moses' attention was that the bush was not consumed by the fire.

Either it was a "cold" fire or the bush in it was protected in some way. So why was the bush fire burning at all? It could have been burning anywhere else. But Moses might not have been so interested in that - he might have thought of the fire as an outpouring of gases.

3 And Moses said, "I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned."

However, Moses' attention was reliably attracted and he was about to investigate the matter further.

4 When the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here I am."

There was talk of an angel, but now the Lord is observing the situation and speaking. The angel apparently prepared a "place" for God where God's presence broke through on earth.

The exchange between the angel and the Lord is relatively common. It is also possible that Jesus is present at such encounters.

God considered the matter with Moses so important that He did not hesitate to go to meet him alone.

God calls out to Moses, addressing him by name.

That must have been quite a shock. Moses' knees must have shaken. If our name had come out of the fire twice, we would certainly have "taken notice".

Moses responds logically: someone is calling me by name, it would probably be a good idea to respond and let it be known that I hear.

5 Then he said, "Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground."

What is God communicating to Moses? Tell him to keep his distance.

That every place where God's presence occurs becomes a very special, holy place - that is, pure and set apart.

Why does Moses have to respond to the holiness of the place by taking off his shoes? This is a new, previously unknown principle: in God's presence, where God's holiness is present, it is not appropriate to walk in shoes. Joshua later received a similar command.

Perhaps it is a similar principle to the one we are familiar with: Don't walk on the carpet in my living room with your shoes on when I've just cleaned it.

Shoes are always dirty with dust from the road. At the Last Supper, Jesus said that those who are bathed need only have their feet washed, and he washed his disciples' feet himself. The dirt on the feet is a symbol of the everyday "common pollution" of sin in the world. The feet come into contact with the ground and its impurities.

By taking off his shoes, Moses was able to express his humility. Without shoes, we are vulnerable and "naked" before God.

The concept of removing one's shoes in sacred spaces is used by many religions: Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism – it is an expression of respect for the sacred place, an expression of humility and purification.

The concept of removing one's shoes in sacred spaces is used by many religions: Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism – it is an expression of respect for the sacred place, an expression of humility and purification.

People reportedly take off their shoes before entering churches in some Eastern Orthodox churches (Ethiopian) and in the Coptic Church.
